Landscaping &  Grounds Work in Port Wentworth, GA

Port Wentworth is two cities sharing a name. On one side of it, warehouses and distribution facilities stretch along Highway 21 and Jimmy DeLoach, feeding a port that moves more containers through a single terminal than anywhere else in North America. On the other, master-planned neighborhoods like Rice Hope and Rice Creek are filling in fast, on flat ground threaded with ponds and drainage ditches.

We work both sides. Decker Landscape & Design installs mulch and decorative rock, plants shrubs and trees, handles landscape cleanups and bed restoration, corrects grading and drainage, clears brush and overgrowth, and runs skid steer and tractor work - for homeowners, HOAs, property managers, and industrial facilities.

Our Georgia location is in Bloomingdale, a short run down Highway 80. Contact us for a FREE quote.

Custom Landscaping in Port Wentworth

New neighborhoods here come with a particular set of conditions: flat lots, high water, ponds and ditches close by, and not much established planting yet. Older parts of town near the river have the opposite - mature trees, settled ground, and landscaping that's been in place long enough to need rethinking.

Our custom work includes bed design and installation, privacy and screening plantings, front-entry and walkway landscaping, drainage correction and regrading, planting for wet or low areas, converting beds between mulch and decorative rock, and full restoration of neglected landscaping.

If your neighborhood has an HOA with standards, or your lot backs onto a pond or common area, mention it when you call - it affects what we'd recommend.

Industrial & Commercial Grounds Work

Port Wentworth has an unusual amount of industrial property for a city its size, and more coming - including a 1,065-acre master-planned industrial park on Highway 21 with buildings delivering through 2026 and beyond. Distribution centers, warehouses, and port-related facilities all carry grounds that need looking after, and most of it is the exact work we do.

What we handle on commercial and industrial sites:

  • Annual mulch and decorative rock installation on entrance beds and frontage

  • Bed cleanouts, weed control, and seasonal cleanups

  • Shrub and tree replacement where plantings have died or outgrown their space

  • Perimeter and fence line brush clearing, including the back and side boundaries nobody looks at until they're a problem

  • Detention and retention pond bank clearing and maintenance

  • Grading and drainage correction on lots, lay-down yards, and truck court edges

  • Post-construction cleanup and site prep on new builds

  • Material moving, spreading, and Harley raking

Truck traffic doesn't stop for landscaping. We schedule around shift changes and receiving hours where we can, stage material out of the way of truck movements, and keep crews clear of active lanes. If your site has safety requirements, check-in procedures, or restricted areas, tell us up front and we'll work to them.

For commercial clients we'd rather quote an annual cycle than a string of one-off jobs - mulch in spring, cleanups through the season, and whatever replacement planting the property needs. It's easier to budget and the property never falls behind. Property managers, facility managers, and general contractors - get in touch and we'll come look at the site.

Living Next to a Pond, Ditch, or Wet Edge

A lot of newer Port Wentworth homes back onto a stormwater pond, a drainage ditch, or a low strip of ground that stays wet. It's how flat land gets developed - the water has to go somewhere, and it's routed through the neighborhood. That gives you a view, and it gives you a few things to think about.

  • Know what you own and what the HOA owns. Pond banks, ditches, and the strips around them are often common property or held in a drainage easement even when they look like part of your yard. That determines who's responsible for maintaining them and what you're allowed to change. Worth reading your documents before planning anything back there.

  • Don't fill or regrade a drainage way. Ditches and swales between and behind houses are engineered to move water through the neighborhood. Filling one, narrowing it, or planting something that blocks it pushes water onto a neighbor and puts you crosswise with both the HOA and the city. Correcting drainage near one means working with it, not against it.

  • Bank erosion is worth catching early. Pond banks scour where water enters and where mowing has left them bare. Established roots hold a bank far better than turf does, so planting the edge - where the HOA allows it - is usually the cheapest long-term fix. Once a bank has started slumping, it's a much bigger job.

  • Plant for the conditions, not the catalog. The edge of a pond or ditch is wet for stretches and dry for stretches, which kills a lot of ordinary landscape plants. Things that handle it well here include wax myrtle, bald cypress, Louisiana iris, soft rush, muhly grass, and swamp sunflower. Higher and drier a few feet back, yaupon holly and loropetalum do fine.

  • Mosquitoes come with the territory. Standing water on your own lot is the part you can control. A low corner that holds water for days after every rain is worth regrading - it's a drainage fix and a mosquito fix at the same time.

  • And a limit worth stating plainly: if water in your yard is coming from the pond being full, a high water table, or a storm system that's overwhelmed, yard grading won't change that. We'll tell you when you're looking at a drainage problem we can fix and when you're looking at one that belongs to the neighborhood or the city.

Port Wentworth Landscaping FAQs

  • Port Wentworth including Rice Hope, Rice Creek, and the newer neighborhoods off Highway 30 and Highway 21, plus Garden City, Bloomingdale, Pooler, Savannah, and west Chatham County. Not sure about your street? Just ask.

  • Yes - warehouses, distribution facilities, offices, and retail. Mulch and rock cycles, bed cleanouts, perimeter and fence line clearing, pond bank maintenance, drainage correction, post-construction cleanup, and site prep. We can quote a single job or an annual cycle.

  • Sometimes, and it's often a good idea, since roots hold a bank better than grass. But the bank may be common property or sit in a drainage easement, which means the HOA decides. Check your documents first and we'll plan to whatever they allow.

  •

Often. Settled low spots, misdirected downspouts, and grading that sends water the wrong way are all correctable. What grading can't fix is a high water table or water backing up from a full pond or an overloaded storm system, and we'll tell you straight if that's what's happening.

  •

Plants suited to it - wax myrtle, bald cypress, Louisiana iris, soft rush, muhly grass, and swamp sunflower all handle wet feet far better than typical landscape shrubs. Choosing for the conditions beats fighting them.

  •

Yes. Several Port Wentworth communities have architectural or landscaping standards, and some require approval before major plantings, bed material changes, or anything that affects drainage. Tell us at the quote stage and we'll give you a plan you can submit.

  •

Brush, overgrowth, saplings, and small trees. Mature trees need a dedicated tree service with the right rigging and insurance, and we'll say so rather than take on something we shouldn't.

  •

Yes, and it's in the quote. On clearing and cleanup work, dealing with what comes off the property is most of the job.

  •

Usually. On subdivision lots we plan around gate widths and take care with driveways and turf. Where access is too tight, we'll move material by hand instead of risking damage, and we'll tell you at the quote which it'll be.

  •

Fall. Cooler weather lets roots establish before their first summer, which matters in this heat.

  •

Once a year, usually in spring. Heat, humidity, and heavy rain break organic mulch down faster here than in cooler climates. Two to three inches is plenty, pulled back from stems, trunks, and foundations.

  •

Georgia's Water Stewardship Act limits landscape watering from public water systems to between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., year-round. New plantings are exempt for their first 30 days - exactly when they need it most. Drip irrigation, soaker hoses, and hand-watering with a shut-off nozzle are also exempt. Drought conditions can bring tighter rules, so check with the City of Port Wentworth.
